Flat Lay may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of the wedding day, but these little details are just as important. Each one was thought through and planned out, and executed with love. They are part of the wedding story, and deserve to be documented.

The focus on the wedding day can get swept up in the timeline and main events, but the little details of the wedding had just as much thought and love put into them as the big ticket items. Most of the time it’s in these little details that the couple is able to show their personalities, and I absolutely love capturing them! Whether that’s in the flat lay, or decor at the ceremony or reception, the details do matter! When I got married thirteen years ago, I only hired a photographer for the ceremony. I had no detail photos, no getting ready photos, and no reception photos. I thought that the ceremony and the family formals were the most important, so with a tiny budget, that’s all I had photographed.

Guess what. Thirteen years later, I have no idea what my details were. I can’t remember them. I only remember the stationery, because I saved one of my invitations and framed it. Otherwise I would have no idea. I can’t remember what the reception looked like at all! I regret not hiring a photographer for the entire event, and it’s one of the reasons I offer a full experience vs. smaller packages. I believe that everything should be documented, and to do that, I have to be there pretty much all day.

While flat lay does take time, to me, it’s worth it. I would have loved to have a photo I could print of my invitation stylized beautifully with my florals and jewelry, but all I have is a framed invitation in a floating frame. I don’t have the envelopes or labels I used to ship them, and can’t remember what they looked like— because they weren’t captured by my photographer. The photos are what couples remember of their wedding day years down the road, so there needs to be more than just portraits.

To me, that’s why details are important.
